This Week: A Full X Automation
Hey guys, I’m back with the videos and as a reward for sticking around I want to give you guys my full X automation. But first, some new information about Brixton AI’s new newsletter.
I want to stress that I firmly believe that everyone should start a newsletter. I think it is the best way to demonstrate your brand’s expertise and connect with your audience. To that point, a few weeks ago the Brixton AI group bought another newsletter focused on digital marketing. As I’m sure you may know, there isn’t a ton of information out there about buying newsletters, so I’d like to give you some information about some mistakes we made and what we would do differently.
And remember, if you’d like to start a newsletter, you can receive a free first month and 30% off your first three months if you want to upgrade. There are both free and paid plans available, so choose whatever you’d like. In the last ten days we were able to help a client grow his newsletter from zero to almost 3,000 subscribers so this isn’t some far fetched unreachable goal. Click here for the access.
Clocked In, A Digital Marketing Newsletter
Let’s talk about how we found the newsletter for sale. There are a few options but by far the one that really matters is duuce.com. It has tons of newsletters at all price points and topics. But here we found a digital marketing newsletter. Typically a newsletter is valued around a dollar per subscriber.
This newsletter had great open rates, click through rates and revenue. It was also about digital marketing which is a complimentary niche along with AI + Automation. We managed to snag it at around 1/3 of the amount of subscribers, so I thought it was a good deal, but after the newsletter was purchased, we started to see some issues right away.
If you’d like to check out the newsletter, you can subscribe to Clocked In Here.
What Was Wrong?
As soon as the first email was sent, there were indications that something was wrong. The open rates dropped from over 50% to under 10%. The clickthrough rate was literally zero. We had to dive in deeper, we needed to see what could be happening…
As we combed through the account we found some troubling emails. It turns out the owner of the newsletter had been urging his subscribers to forget about this newsletter, and subscribe to his new one. He gave a lot of sense of urgency and sent out about 10 emails over a few weeks. He then deleted these emails to hide his tracks from us but we were able to recover the emails and after contacting him were SOL, getting back essentially a “too bad”.
However, that wasn’t the fundamental problem. We started to examine the newsletter way more in depth, and read literally all of his posts going back years. What we realized was that the newsletter didn’t offer much value, which we originally thought was an opportunity for us to increase the value proposition and give subscribers a ton of value for sticking with us.
The core problem, the big issue, the reason for the abysmal open rates, was that although at first glance we thought we bought a newsletter focused on digital marketing, it was actually a bit different. You see, this guy was a bit of a personality, and started this newsletter in college. This newsletter subscriber base was essentially made up of his college friends. It wasn’t a digital marketing newsletter we purchased, it was a newsletter based around this guys personality.
What I Would Do Differently
There are a few things I would do differently:
I would ensure we had an agreement that either A, the owner of the newsletter didn’t announce their departure or B, they announced it in collaboration with us, together, ensuring a smooth transition and send off. We essentially had to completely rebrand the newsletter and build it back up from scratch.
I would ensure we’re buying a newsletter that is popular because of value being delivered based on a certain niche. We would not buy a newsletter based on a personality because once that personality departs, the “value” that was delivered to the subscriber base is impossible to replicate.
Newsletters are a business with incredible potential. Although we did manage to get it for a relative bargain, it wasn’t worth the money, because when you look at open rates and engagement rates, the newsletter was actually worth less. We are delivering a ton of value with that newsletter though, and do not plan on selling it so, again, if you’re interested in digital marketing, it’s a great option.
I urge you to do your due diligence when investing in a newsletter, truly understand the value behind it and do your own valuation. Best of luck with the purchase, and if you need any advice, i’m just an email away.
Now For The X Automation
This is a full X automation and I’m not going to lie this is a great one. There is so much potential with this powerful animation and I am proud of the tweets it’s able to generate.
